Coffee

Author Dan Harfield

I (we) think about coffee a lot.

We love the sacred ritual of daily preparation, the blend of rich ingredient narratives, a bootstrap independent inventor community and aesthetic languages which oscillate between function and sensorial indulgence.

Here’s four good ones…

LIGRE Youn Coffee System

Designed by industrial studio Relvãokellermann, the LIGRE portafilter espresso machine presents a minimalist challenge to the muscular E61 legacy. Its monolithic, modern surfaces achieve an elegant balance between indulgent expressiveness and modular engineering, complemented by thoughtful CMF design. This demonstrates how we can create products that speak fluently to both coffee purists and design enthusiasts, striking that crucial balance between mechanical integrity and sensory appeal.

xBloom

xBloom brings intelligence to the pour-over ritual through a single-serve machine that combines clever mechanics with contemporary coffee aesthetics. The system elegantly solves the fundamental pour-over dilemma – the conflict between brewing convenience and optimal coffee volumes – while maintaining the ceremony coffee lovers cherish. This showcases our ability to transform novel technology into meaningful consumer experiences that solve real problems without sacrificing the cultural touchstones that matter.

Brew Bird

Brew Bird, emerging from San Francisco’s rich coffee scene, proves that technology can deepen rather than distance us from local coffee culture. Their innovative bean-to-cup system connects users directly with neighbourhood roasters, pioneering a future where coffee celebrates quality, sustainability, and local community through cutting-edge technology. I love this approach, and it really reflects what we do best at Rodd: taking a proof of concept and uncovering its human story, transforming mechanical innovation into experiences that matter.

Minus & Northern Wonder

Like the best meat alternatives, these brands understand that shifting consumer behaviour requires more than just a sustainable product – it demands powerful brand storytelling. In this case, Minus & Northern Wonder confront coffee’s environmental impact – particularly its contribution to tropical deforestation – through compelling narratives tailored to Gen-Z consumption patterns. To me, this is proof of the role strong brand narratives play in pioneering industry evolution, particularly in sustainability-focused transitions.

These innovations show us how technology can enhance rather than replace what we love about coffee culture.

From minimalist espresso machines to sustainable alternatives, each advancement serves to deepen our connection to craft and community while honouring the rituals we cherish.
