New Designers 2024

Another year, another wonderful batch of designers in the making!

Every summer, I make it a priority to attend New Designers. This annual London showcase, which has been running for over 40 years, provides a platform for more than 3,000 graduates to present their ideas to industry professionals and the public.

This year, I was struck by the recurring themes and the way these designers tackled some of the most pressing challenges we face today.

Here are some of the highlights:

Extending the product lifespan

Sustainability has taken a bigger step in shifting from simply using less harmful materials or creating recyclable products to keeping items in use for longer periods. Durable design was key this year, with products that could be easily repaired or that evolved with the user’s needs over time. For example, in the childcare sector, I saw pieces of furniture that could adapt to a child’s age and accommodate various activities such as playtime, learning, or sitting.

Promoting inclusivity and understanding

Inclusivity & diversity were also at the forefront, with designers showcasing projects that empowered people with disabilities or impairments to be as independent as possible. Further, “Inclusive communication” was another highlight, allowing carers or non-disabled individuals to better understand the experiences and feelings of those with disabilities. These projects aimed to bridge the gap between individuals and build stronger relationships.

Blending the physical and the digital

In the realms of technology and wellbeing, designers explored more tangible experiences. On the tech front, students sought to “physicalise” digital experiences, bringing back tangible elements to our everyday lives. These projects ranged from translating music into physical art pieces, creating insulated sound panels, to receiving notifications through physical means.

Furthermore, in the wellbeing space, designers focused on connecting users with their emotional states through physical experiences, such as using vibration systems to instigate breathing exercises and help cope with stressful situations.

It’s always inspiring to see the passion and dedication that these young designers bring to their work. Their fresh perspectives and bold ideas give me hope for the future of our industry and the positive impact that design can have on the world. I can’t wait to see what next year’s New Designers has in store!
