Sustainability X Tech

Author Béatrice Lorans

A recent UN report reveals a sobering reality: our growing population, nearing 8 billion, generates 53.6 million metric tonnes of e-waste annually. This crisis goes beyond environmental damage; it’s a public health concern, with the toxic substances in electronic waste causing harm to communities worldwide.

We urgently need a paradigm shift towards circular product design where resources are not just used, but reused, keeping their value in a continuous cycle.

Throughout history, design has always existed to solve problems, and it’s heartening to see a cohort of tech brands heeding the call of planet-conscious consumers and using design to tackle this urgent challenge.

Here are a few that have caught my attention:

Framework: The Easy-to-Repair Laptop

Framework is redefining the tech landscape and addressing the e-waste crisis with its repair-friendly laptops. Designed with both sustainability and user experience in mind, these laptops offer an extended lifespan and the ability to personalise, fostering a deeper connection with users.  Framework demonstrates how sustainable product design can contribute to a circular economy and meet the demands of modern consumers.

Daisy: Apple's Recycling Robot

Capable of disassembling multiple iPhone models, Daisy is a step towards Apple’s net-zero carbon emissions goal. As smartphones become a significant portion of global e-waste, Daisy’s role in recovering valuable components is crucial. This approach illustrates the importance of designing products for easy repair and recycling, aligning with the more planet-focused principles of younger generations.

ReCasetify is Casetify’s phone case recycling program, now incorporating art collaborations in its repurposing efforts.  This initiative not only manages the product lifecycle with care but also builds a stronger, more personal connection with customers. To me, ReCasetify is a testament to how brands can be environmentally responsible while also fostering a loyal community around shared values.

Website Carbon Calculator

In an often-overlooked aspect of sustainability, the Website Carbon Calculator has made me more conscious of the digital footprint we leave behind.  With websites consuming significant amounts of electricity, this tool helps visualise a website’s environmental impact, reminding us that sustainability isn’t confined to physical products but extends to our digital presence.
