Two ambitious founders approached us with an early concept for a seated exerciser designed to support everyday mobility. Together, we shaped a product that brings accessible movement into the flow of daily life.
This work began through a development grant managed by the Design-Age Institute at the Royal College of Art, which appointed and financed our team to accelerate the idea into a design ready for manufacture. Our appointment reflected our long-standing experience with inclusive design and our ability to guide early ideas towards production-ready reality.
Bringing both lived experience and clinical insight from general practice, the founders had conceptualised a seated exerciser that responded to the way people move through their day.
Their thinking focused on the small, achievable moments where gentle activity supports mobility, especially for those who spend long periods seated at home or at work. Their early proof-of-principle prototype had already demonstrated clinical efficacy and secured Innovate UK funding, which created a strong platform for the next phase of development.
We refined the aesthetics, explored colour and brand direction and developed a series of engineering prototypes that advanced both the structural design and the roller bearing system. These iterations reduced rolling resistance, removed bearing noise and created a smooth, consistent rhythm underfoot. A final batch of functional devices supported testing, demonstration and exhibition.
The design language grew from functional clarity and tactility. Early investigations focused on soft, domestic palettes such as clay and sea-green, paired with rounded geometry, controlled surfacing and textured rollers. As production approached, we shifted to a bolder palette that supported stronger visibility and delivered a clear identity at retail.
Since launch, the Trainor Jim Shuffler has found a natural place in people’s routines, celebrated for its simplicity and the steady lift it brings to daily mobility. We are proud to have shaped a product that supports movement for all in a dignified, meaningful way.
