Since 1993, Crystal Spring has been producing natural crystal deodorants for the UK and Europe’s personal care sector. Their Salt of the Earth brand has become a customer favourite, combining 100% natural ingredients to offer long lasting protection from body odour.
When the brand approached us, they were victims of their own success: with both major label retail customers and a strong D2C offering, their products had become a powerful health story. Eager to build on their reputation for deodorants that are both effective and ethical, Crystal Spring had their sights set on sustainability. With the results of a customer survey revealing a clear demand for refillable solutions, the brand brought us in to explore new avenues for pack design.
Although the personal care industry trades on quality of purity and nature, much of the sector remains unsustainable through its use of single-use packaging. To us, it’s extremely encouraging to see brands like Crystal Spring recognise their role in driving change through the design and delivery of their product range. Working closely with their design team, we began devising a series of solutions that were both scalable and sustainable by design.
The first of these projects is a refillable rollerball deodorant and a companion refill bottle.
Led by passion, purpose and a drive to meet changing customer demands, we worked meticulously to conceive and develop the pack solution, managing the design from first concept to tooling. We even delivered a dedicated, sustainable supply chain solution. Eager to ensure the most environmentally-friendly design possible, we continued to optimise the product to reduce material shot-weight whilst driving up the percentages of PCR. The result was a refillable deodorant that boasted both personal care and planet care.
In turn, Salt of the Earth has continued to swing from strength to strength, receiving recognition in the form of green beauty awards and praise from consumer publications in the personal care space. We are proud to have played a key role in the design of sustainable solutions for Crystal Spring and are confident that more brands will follow in their footsteps to help put an end to plastic waste.
