Climate Adaptive Lives

Author Sakshi Seth

As extreme weather becomes the norm, how can design help us adapt?

From protective gear and wearable cooling technologies to urban planning and adaptive skincare, forward-thinking brands are finding ways to meet new climate realities head-on.

Here are four that caught my attention…

Techniche

Techniche, a UK-based company, creates cooling workwear designed to combat extreme heat in industries like construction. Their advanced thermoregulation apparel helps maintain safe body temperatures, reducing heat stress and improving comfort during long outdoor shifts.

This approach shows how clothing can be an active tool for managing environmental stress, redefining expectations for functional apparel while enhancing safety and performance.

Qore Performance

US-based Qore Performance developed IcePlate Curve cooling vests, used by organisations like FedEx, Boeing, and the US Air Force. These vests help workers stay cool and efficient in extreme heat through portable, wearable cooling technology.

This innovative tech seamlessly integrates personal safety with environmental adaptability, offering businesses a scalable, practical way to support their workforce’s well-being in demanding conditions.

Singapore’s Urban Planning

Thinking one step ahead, Singapore is transforming its urban environment to integrate more vegetation, shaded pathways, and water features to reduce urban heat. These natural cooling strategies help manage rising temperatures while enhancing livability.

This citywide approach proves that climate resilience can be embedded into infrastructure, creating sustainable, comfortable urban spaces that balance environmental and human needs.

Pour Moi & Prada

Beauty brands are adapting too. Pour Moi’s Smoke Alarm Drops counteract damage from wildfire smoke, while Prada’s Adapto.gn Smart Technology customises skincare based on environmental conditions like heat and pollution.

By addressing climate-induced skin concerns, these brands are moving from reactive treatments to proactive protection, aligning personal care with environmental awareness and redefining beauty as a tool for resilience.
