When our long term partner, SGW Global, asked us to lead on the design of the world’s first Alexa-enabled home phone for Motorola, we harnessed the power of clean, timeless industrial design to create a modern handset that would bring convenience to a new generation of consumers interested in tech and lifestyle design.
Given that over 50% of UK homes have voice assistant technology, it’s clear that the popularity of voice-activated tech is only set to grow. However, while we had seen the integration of voice assistants to mobiles for many years, home telephone systems had yet to benefit from the same upgrade. However, when coupled with SGW’s over-the-top (OTT) bridge products, there was a clear opportunity to extend the reach for Alexa within the home.
Eager to enhance the domestic landline experience through technology, Motorola called on SGW to realise their vision. Over the years, we have proudly partnered with SGW, a global leader in consumer electronics, on a number of projects within the telecoms industry. So, with a new challenge in hand, SGW turned to a partner they could trust with the design of a pioneering home phone.
Building on the success of the original CD1 handset that we designed as one of the first European handsets for the Motorola brand, we adopted the soft, approachable design language. This approach ensured that the Alexa-powered home phones would complement the existing models and connect with the emerging trend for ‘shy tech’.
The result is the Motorola AX, the world’s first wireless home telephone including voice recognition for calls and smart home control. Not only is Alexa built in, but this is the first device to offer both Alexa-to-Alexa and landline-to-landline calling via Alexa, giving customers control and convenience in how they communicate.
Slim, neat and simple, the models we designed complemented the CD1 handsets and blend seamlessly with your home’s interiors. With its domestic look and feel, the Motorola AX integrates naturally into any setting, enhancing the experience of voice assistant technology without compromising on aesthetics.
+ Enhance technology with lifestyle-design.
