Designing a stand-out product identity

When Xumo called on us to help them cut through the noise of their category, we collaborated with their team, building a stand-out product identity for their unique set-top-box with an in-hand remote experience that pushed the boundaries of digital video technology.
When Xumo arrived on the scene in 2011, they saw an opportunity to transform the viewer experience with a product that responded to the increasingly digital needs of users. In line with their vision, we set out to help the young brand stake a claim in their market with a product identity that stood out from the competition.
To enable this, we created Pebble - a set-top-box that boasts a unique identity and an asymmetric form factor. Reflecting the needs of modern viewers, we designed an intuitive remote with an adaptive display to allow for seamless control over live TV, YouTube or even social media. We knew that by leveling up the in-hand user experience, we could help the tech company to catch industry headlines and establish themselves as a leader in their space.
Plus, most digital set-top-boxes of the time had unsightly perforations at the back to release excess heat. Working within the constraints of size inspired us to innovate the design of this necessary function. By wrapping the box in a soft textile, we allowed for breathability, much to the delight of Xumo's engineers.
Further, we felt it was important that the design direction break away from the ‘silver and black’ ID norm. We challenged this standard by creating a device that would complement the domestic surroundings it was set to inhabit. Not only did the small format and expressive use of fabric provide technical advantages, it created a distinct stance for this young aspirational brand and helped them to push their category further.
